Unable to use Data Extensions linked in MobileConnect Demographics in Journey Builder

It is possible to link data extensions to the MobileConnect Demographics attribute group. However, when using any linked Data Extensions in Journey Builder, you will notice that contacts fail out of the journey.
-Contact Builder > Data Designer > MobileConnect Data > Link any Data Extension to MobileConnect Subscriptions
-Go to Journey Builder > Create New Journey
-Drag any entry event onto the canvas and configure it to completion
-Drag a decision split onto the canvas > Contact Data > Find your newly linked Data Extension and use any attribute
-Configure the rest of the journey to completion and activate
-Note contacts fail at the decision split
If the Data Extensions are not used in any other journeys, unlink the data extensions, create a new attribute group, and link them directly to contactkey
If the Data Extensions are used in other journeys, copy the data extensions, create a new attribute group, and link them directly to contactkey
