Sandbox copy failing to delete despite being deleted from the sandbox list

Summary
Some customers may have observed that they're still able to log in to sandboxes they've deleted from the Sandbox list page (Setup | Environments | Sandboxes).
Customers can log in to these copies since they're not purged but won't be able to move any metadata from/to the affected sandbox copy.
Note: the issue is sporadic.
Repro
1. Create a sandbox
2. Delete it
Workaround
Please log a case with Salesforce.com Support and request to delete the affected sandbox copy.
