Related List page hangs if a non-admin user is trying to sort an Activity Lookup Related List in the Lightning Experience

Summary
In the Lightning Experience, when a non-system administrator tries to sort a related list which is created from a custom activity lookup field, the page does not load the information.
This does not happen for system administrators.
Repro
(Login as Admin user)
1. Create an Activity Lookup field (Lookup to Account), and Add the activity Related List to Account page layout.
2. Create an Account record.
3. Insert 50+ task records for the account from #2. (Map the account ID to the activity lookup field.)
* (Login as a NON-Admin user)
4. In the Lightning Experience, open the account and navigate to the activity lookup Related List and click 'View All'.
5. Try to sort the Related List on "Subject", and the page hangs.
