Article View Count doesn't increment correctly when articles are viewed in Lightning

Customers may observed that an article's view count doesn't increase by the expected number of views after an article is viewed in Lightning, but views in Classic are reflected on the respective article's view count in Lightning.
-View a KB article from within Lightning Experience (via search, clicking on the title via report or list view, etc).
There are multiple ways to reproduce this issue. Some ways may result in article views in Lightning not being counted at all. Other ways may result in single article views being counted up to 5 times.
None at this time when viewing articles in Lightning. If accurate article view count figures are critical, consider viewing articles in Classic.
