Internal Server Error encountered with standard Activities report types in Essentials Edition organizations

In Essentials Edition organizations, creating a report using one of the standard Activities report types and choosing to show "All activities" or "My delegated activities" will cause an error similar to the following:
"An internal server error has occurred
An error has occurred while processing your request. The salesforce.com support team has been notified of the problem. If you believe you have additional information that may be of help in reproducing or correcting the error, please contact Salesforce Support. Please indicate the URL of the page you were requesting, any error id shown on this page as well as any other related information. We apologize for the inconvenience.

1) Navigate to the Reports tab and create a new report
2) Choose a standard Activities report type (e.g. Tasks & Events, Activities with Accounts, Activities with Contacts, etc)
3) Run the report
4) Change "My Activities" to "All activities" or "My delegated activities"
5) Run the report again
6) The error will be encountered
Create a Custom Report Type instead of using the standard Activities report types
