Changing RelatedTo field for EmailMessage in Triggers not working as expected in Lightning

If an Email is sent from an Object's related list, and the relationship relatedTo field modified using a Before Trigger, then it is possible that the Email still stores a relationship to the original Object record and is visible on the Object's related lists.

Note that this only occurs in Lightning, in Salesforce Classic there is no relationship to the original parent Object when the relatedTo field is modified by a Before Trigger.

This can wrongly expose emails to users who should normally have access to the EmailMessage under expected sharing rules of the original and resulting parent Objects.

- To reproduce create a new custom object, allowing activities.
- Add a tab for the new object.
- Change the Org-Wide Default setting from Sharing settings to Private for this custom object.
- Create a custom object record.
- Create a trigger on the EmailMessage object using code below:

- Login as a standard user and switch to Classic.
- Create a new object record.
- Click on "Send Email" in the related lists, and send an email.
- This should initially have Account as the relatedTo. But once sent the trigger changes it to custom object record created above.
- The standard user should not see the email message in the object's related list.

- Switch to Lightning.
- Navigate to same object record and try sending another email
- Note that the email message will still be visible to user in the object's related list.
- This is incorrect as the email message has the relatedTo set to a new parent.

This functionality works correctly in Salesforce Classic. Only Salesforce Lightning is impacted.
