Summary
Data Extensions with the same name and external key can be created in the shared directory at the Enterprise level, even if the same name and external key exists in a business unit. This results in both data extensions being un-editable.

Repro
1. Go to a Business Unit in a Enterprise 2.0 account
2. Go to Email Studio > Subscribers > Data Extensions
3. Create a new data extension (DE) with external key = e.g. "ExternalKeyTest". Fields and data retention do not matter
4.Navigate to the Enterprise/top level > Email Studio > Subscribers > Shared Data Extensions
5. Create the same DE as above with the same external key of "ExternalKeyTest". The creation will succeed.
When you try to add a field to either data extension and note it will appear to save but never actually adds the field.

Workaround
Do not create Data Extensions with the same external key across an enterprise.

Rename the external key of an existing data extension if there is a need to change the data extension associated to the external key.

Move the shared Data Extension out of the Shared Folder and into an account that does not share the same external key and then edit the Data Extension.
