Summary
"Custom Field Limit Exceeded" Exception raises during package installation or upgrade even if a package doesn't counts against object limits.
Repro
1. Login as admin
2. Copy and paste the Package upgrade link
3. Proceed with the installation
ERROR
Your request to install package "ABCDEFG" was unsuccessful. None of the data or setup information in your salesforce.com organization was affected.
If your install continues to fail, contact Salesforce CRM Support through your normal channels and provide the following information.
Organization: XXXXXX (00Dxxxxxxxxx)
User: YYYYYY (005xxxxxxxxx)
Package: ABCDEFG (04txxxxxxxxx)
Problem:
1. ............ Custom Field Limit Exceeded Either you or your organization has exceeded the maximum number of custom fields allowed in the system. Please contact your administrator for more information.
Workaround
Delete own custom field on subscriber org
