Lightning Experience - Too many Lookup fields on page layout causes error when trying to merge Leads

When there are too many lookup fields on a page layout in Lightning, and error will display when trying to merge duplicate Leads:
“Review the following errors. These records aren’t available for merging. Ask your Salesforce admin for help”
In Lightning Experience, add lookups to your Lead page layout (the number will vary depending on data volume, but roughly around 35).
Find two duplicate Leads and try to merge them.
Error: “Review the following errors. These records aren’t available for merging. Ask your Salesforce admin for help”
Remove some of the Lookups from the page layout.
