"We couldn't find the record you're trying to access" error when viewing the Activity Timeline in Lightning Experience

Summary
When viewing the Activity Timeline on a record in Lightning Experience, the following error may be returned:
"We couldn't find the record you're trying to access. It may have been deleted by another user, or there may have been a system error. Ask your administrator for help."
In this issue, the error is generated when the User has been assigned a Force.com - App Subscription license and their profile does not have Read permission on Contact.
If you're encountering this error message, but the above is not true, please contact Salesforce support as the error may be the result of a different issue.
Repro
1. In a Lightning enabled org, assign a User the Force.com - App Subscription license.
2. On the User's Profile and any assigned Permission Sets, ensure that Read access to Contact has not been granted.
3. Access the Activity Timeline of a record and note the error.
Workaround
Grant Read access to Contact on the User's Profile.
