Data Import Wizard, fields not available for mapping

There is an issue at this time where fields may not be available for mapping in the import wizard. This behavior is caused by an issue on our end where the correct record type is not referenced during the import process.
This scenario typically happens when fields are not present on the very first record type/page layout in an org.
1) The importing user's profile must have access to at least one object record type and page layout - but not the first record type/ page layout created.
2) Attempt to import data into fields that are present on the page layout the user has access to.
3) Observe the fields are not available on the mapping screen.
If possible, give the profile access to the record type and page layout where the fields are available.
