Internal server error generated when using the softphone search lookup with CTI adapters

With some CTI adapters if you are transferring a call in the softphone you have the option to use the search icon to look up users, contacts and leads. For some implementations using this icon can generate an internal server error popup.
In the softphone select the Transfer Call icon. From the transfer call area select the search lookup icon to find users, contacts, leads etc to transfer the call to. While clicking the search icon an internal server error is generated.
When using the transfer call in the softphone do not use the search icon but search in a separate window in the application and then use the keypad to enter the number to transfer the current call to.
Disable Opportunity trending by navigating to Setup | Build | Customize | Reports and Dashboards | Historical Trending and unchecking the option for Opportunities.
