Lookup fields in lighting datatable component

My team have started building datatable components in Lightning.

We are effectively using it at the Account Level to group Contacts and Opportunities (and other custom objects) by their respective relationships (contact role, etc).

Datatables do not yet support Lookups, which means the user cannot mouse-hover over the record link to view the compact page layout.

Havng this would:

allow us to link to the record without an additional custom column
allow more data about the record to be accessible without having to click into the detail page, thereby leaving the record they are looking at.

Please can you add support for Lookups in Datatable lightning components?

Currently we don't have any such OOB solution but can be achieved by using LWC and extending the lightning datatable to create our own custom type.

This is definitely an issue with Lightning Datatable. We searched for its solution for a long time & ended up having our own custom solution. We have uploaded our solution to the Playground for reusability. Please find the link below.

Any improvements to lightning:datatable will be very useful and really welcome:
- "real" url column type (link type) - or a handler for a render function.
- checkbox control to display for boolean fields.
- "onSelect" event with row, column parameters (not just row) or any other way to attach a popup menu based on selection.
- more properties for "columns" attribute (for ex: "style?", "align", "action", "actionParam") ; the "columns" attribute may be actually created on the server as well by introducing a "visible/hidden" property for "columns".

The more features added the harder development will be, but I think it's worth the effort. Developers will love having to focus less on syling and more on business requirements (see similar products paramQuery, SpreadJS).
Datatables acting like EXCEL are still in big demand for all sorts of management requirements!!

Finally Salesforce have released a table component but they completly forgot about the hyperlink/record lookup data type for the column data. The URL+CSS solution seems to be the only workaround to create link to the record through the Id.
