Can't convert lead because restricted picklist field

If you try to convert a lead, and any field on the lead is mapped to a restricted picklist field on Account, Contact, or Opp, for which the value on the lead is invalid, the following error is displayed.
 
Error when converting: We can't convert this lead because some values are restricted on the contact, account, or opportunity

This is tremendously unhelpful. I just spent over an hour tracking down such an error. The error message should identify the field that is causing the problem.

I was able to find the field by using this apex (anonymously) to identify all picklist fields on the Lead object, then displaying all these fields on the lead that could not be converted, then examining all the fields that were populated on the lead, to find which one was mapped to a restricted picklist for which it was invalid.

It should not be this hard. Also, when I determined where the error was, I tried to look in the Audit Log for who had created an erroneous lead conversion field mapping. Apparently this info is not captured in the audit log. It should be!
