Transferring File Ownership

Chatter & Files

Hi, we have users uploading a lot of files via Chatter > Files, and it's great because of the way they can set up Sharing permissions to restrict who has access to these files.

The problem however, is I've been informed by SFDC support that there's no way to change ownership of the files.  This presents a problem, as when the users leave the company, any files they've uploaded we have no way to transfer to their replacement.  I'm afraid this makes uploading Files via this method useless, as education material, policy procedures, product information sheets- suddenly all gone.

Please implement a way to allow Administrators to change ownership of all of a user's files to a different user so we can retain the information.

Thank you!

You are able to change the owner of files by updating the ContentDocument entity and changing the OwnerId.  ContentDocument is an Id starting with 069. You can do this in bulk, such as for a user who left the company, by using Data Loader.

The main requirements to change ownership is that you are the file owner, or you have the “Modify All Data” permission.  More details can be seen here:

If you are a user with the “Modify All Data” permission and you want to extract documents, you may want to also enable the “Query All Files” permission:
