@mention (or other way to tag) records in a Chatter feed

It would be great to extend @mentions (or some other way to tag - maybe with "@@") records when posting. For example, a sales rep at our company was using Chatter on a contact record to record an interaction with that customer and wanted to reference other contacts he spoke with during the call. Or referencing a Contract from an Chatter feed on an Opportunity or Account.

05.18.12 Update - Changed the status from Delivered in Winter '12 to null. This status was posted in error and this feature was not delivered  in Winter '12.

    The ability to link to a record in a chatter post is now available in Summer '18 as part of Lightning Experience.
