Smart Hashtags: Quickly Linking Chatter Posts to Objects

Accounts & Contacts

It would be great if chatter had "smart hashtag" capabilities.

In my mind I was thinking that if you typed #account:salesforce then it would attach it to the salesforce account, #contact:joe_smith would attach it to Joe's contact record, #applicant:martinez would attach it to our custom object for hiring where the applicant's name was martinez, etc.

Basically the app would try to find an object named whatever exists between the '#' and the ':' and if that object was recognized, then it would search that object's name, title and description fields (if they exist) for the words that are after the colon. If multiple results are found, then attach to all (same logic used by the outlook connector). If no results are found, then leave the chatter post wherever you typed it.

One open question would be spaces. Do we teach users to put underscores instead of spaces, or do we invent a 'closing hashtag' (ex:#contact:joe smith#)?
