SF would probably tell you to create a quick action with a relevant layout and display it as a page component in Lightning, conditionally, when the relationship exists.
This can probably be resolved that way, but it doesn't excuse the egregious (read: typical) lapse in communication.

Hi all, we had the same issue and eventually developed the Ascendix Search app on AppExchange. It allows accessing any fields from related objects without having to create formulas. You can search cross objects and look up any related data from any objects with a few clicks.
Apart of that, you can do advanced searches (single & multi-criteria) without building views or reports, map your data, export it to Excel, bulk edit it, label and group your records, save lists and do multiple actions with your records. It costs $15 per month/per user and has a free 30-day trial.

One of the values of lookup fields is the normalization of data such that it need not be stored in one place. If that relationship is important to record, displaying some of the related data is clearly going to be important to combine with the parent object. The implementation of Parent Account clearly shows that Salesforce recognizes that the concept is very important.
Why hasn't the implementation of Parent Account indirect field references been added to all lookup relationship fields by now?

If this is ever actually rolled out the salesforce team should consider a migration option for existing formula fields to enable this for them (if selected - some orgs may want these to be read only).
As a workaround: create two standard fields of the same type - one on each object and use a process builder or workflow rule to cross-update them using "ischanged". A little messier from a data structure perspective but also allows for easy editing!

been under product management review for some time now! In our org managing fields has become increasingly important and being able to consider fields across all objects would allow for a much cleaner data model. I hope this moves beyond review and into planning at some point:)
