I'll conditionally upvote this with the commment that marketing automation is not necessarily intended for transactional automation. There are no doubt legitimate use cases here, particularly in light of current circumstances, but generally we should consider that transactional messaging ought to come wherever possible from the transactional system and not the marketing automation system.

We could really use this feature! We're sending out COVID-19 Test Kits to research study participants and we'd like to automate following up with the recipients, using an Engagement Program, even if they've opted out of marketing emails (after the test kit was shipped). I'm starting to think of a workaround for this.

We absolutely need this ability.
Use case: daily trade confimations are uploaded to Salesforce. Then need to send a template with HML of # shares and amount to the investor. It's automating a manual process! I can't believe email templates (whether for Engagement Studio or Automation Rules) are not able to be created as Operational emails for a financial transaction confirmation!

Agree with Brian below. The designation of 'Operational' needs to be on the template rather than when sending. Most ofour operational emails are sent like this in response to other events in Salesforce. For example, event details as Brian mentions below (we could automate sending out confirmation email as soon as person is tagged for that event in SF), Support contract renewals - automatic email advising of expiration of customer's support contract based on date in SF, Welcome email to new customers based on closing of an order. So many things that aren't marketing yet we have no way of doing them right now. This functionality is so desperately needed. Also, having it on the template would make it easy to audit use of operational designation - far more so than it only being on sent emails.

Here's why this is important:
The reason for this is because Pardot's email templates don't have the option to check as "Operational Email". And since the engagement studios only send email from an email template, some paying customers aren't receiving the really important email they need to access an online course, training, etc.
This is just one use-case. After reading the comments below, it seems like this is important enough to get to the top of the priority list as soon as you can. I know the Salesforce team probably has a lot on their plate right now, but this is crucial.

I am with Zarina Bhimani and Peter Ötvös on this. Our businesses need this feature.
I posted this idea at Pardot Collaboration community page, I am hoping others will upvote to get some traction to the idea.

I am frustrated. We need a solution for this. Currently, if we need mailable prospects for operational email, we send them to salesforce to set them opted in. At the end of the engagement studio we set them back to opted out.
Mistakes can happen in such workflows -> give us more flexibility!

Desperately needed for things such as automation of renewal of support contracts. Engagement campaigns with process builder offer a practical way of automating this process. Its like Salesforce does'nt want us to be able to automate important customer communications. Engagement campaigns are not just for marketing - they are a practical way of managing important customer communication based off data in Salesforce.
