My organization is gross profit driven as well. All of our account managers are goaled on gp as opposed to total revenue, etc. That is the number that matters to us. I have experimented and love the funtionality of the forecasting module but we can't use it. We use salesforce for everything else and its hugely important to our business.
When will you allow other fields to be used in the forecasting tool?

I'd like to echo Claire below, we target and track our sales teams on profit, not revenue- we're a reseller not a manufacturer, and the sales team are free to set their own sales price with variable profits.
Our account manager hasn't been able to get us on the pilot for Custom Split Types, so would appreciate knowing if/when this reaches the point where it's coming in a given release.

Comments 6 years ago told that this capability was planned.
What about now ?
For amount and qty we use custom field because they are calculated. Not manually filled.
That is why we need forecast used those custom fields.
By the way, we plan to use collaborative forecast

Hi Thaddeus, we plan to allow customers to forecast based on "Custom Split Types" sometime next year. With Custom Split Types, customers will be able to credit the Opportunity Owner with 100% or split credit across multiple team members. The basis for the split can be any currency field on the Opportunity. Custom Split Types is available as a pilot now. Our plan is to map forecasting to the Custom Split Type - which will essentially get you forecasting on a custom field. Safe harbor.

So....do we know when in the future is this coming? We set our sales team targets based on Gross Profit Margin (Revenue = Vanity, Profit = Sanity!), so really need to be able to compare the quota (margin) against the margin field which is a field at the Opportunity level.
Please please please!!

Hey Frank, that's great news. In a subscritption model, companies are more likely to create a custom field to capture CARR and derive forecasts from that field. Giving us the flexibility to drive off of a custom field is required if we want to use the customizable forecasts functionality.

@Brad - the ability to forecast on a customer defined custom field is part of our longer term vision. We would like to give customers this capability. However, as we are in the process of building out Collaborative Forecasts, our first priority is to enable forecasting on the standard fields like Amount, Quantity, Opportunity Product data that may of our customers also require. I can't give you an ETA, but it is not likely within the next year.

We need to be able to forecast projected revenue on opportunities that are for a specified time period (yearly or 6 months) and have specific quantities and revenue per month. The revenue is collected monthly and not at the close of the opportunity. Our company mails coupons for our customers on a monthly basis and provides digital coupons on-line for a specific time-frame. We need to project the revenue and quantities on a monthly basis. Note: The quantities and revenue will differ from month to month.
