Going back and adding the fields to the report type is fine...
The issue I still see as impacting most of us is those fields are not available in any report that was built with that report type before the fields were added. Is that a part of the fix you are trying to prioritize?
Example - Client Success wants a new field of Risk on all their reports for commissions based on a custom object. I can add it to the report type built to support that object BUT all the reports they've been using will need to be built from scratch again because the field isn't available to pull into the already built reports.

Go to the Setup -> Report Types. Select the Report Type which is missing these fields. Click on Edit Layout at the bottom of the page. On the right-hand side of the page, you will see View. Select the object that has the missing fields. Any field that is missing from the existing Report Type will show up in a greenish color. You can pull these into the report.

I don't create new fields all that often and just this morning created one and needed to add it to the Report Type and thought to myself, "There MUST be an idea on the Idea Exchange for this". Less than 20 minutes later I see the announcement and this is the #1 winner. AWESOME!! But did it really take 11 YEARS to make it to the top of the heap?

You prioritized it and now we’re building it! Thank you, Trailblazers, for helping us shape our product roadmap.
Inspired by this idea, we’re working on the following feature: Auto add fields to report types, which is targeted for Beta in Winter'21 release (safe harbor).
